Art Martinez de Vara is the author of numerous award-winning books and articles on Texas history and the indigenous people of southern Texas and northeastern Mexico. Tejano Patriot: The Revolutionary Life of Jose Francisco Ruiz, published in 2020, was named a Best Texas Book by the Austin American-Statesman. He is a two time winner of the Presidio La Bahia Award and the Texas State Genealogical Society Grand Prize Book Award.
